This week marks the beginning of my marathon training! It also kicks off the fund raising for my goal: raise $3,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). For the 3rd year in a row, I am running with Team in Training (TNT) to successfully complete the KC Marathon on Oct 19th, and in the process, raise funds to support much needed research as well as provide aid to patients and families. All of the money stays in the local KC area, and it has been such a blessing to be associated with this great organization and cause.
I love running; that is no secret. Running a marathon, 26.2 miles, now that is something that requires me to go beyond myself. I have a love/hate relationship with marathons. It’s kind of like that super hot salsa that you love, even though it makes you feel like your lips and tongue are in flames. You know you should stop eating it, but you can’t stop. That’s how marathons are for me. They are hard, painful, challenging, yet somewhere in the journey they are also amazing and wonderful and BOLD. And I can’t stop! I know though, that I need a special fuel to get me through the really tough training runs and special fuel to propel me through the parts of the race where I think I’m going to collapse. For me, that special fuel is knowing that I’m running in support of a great cause — to find a cure for blood cancers, to help people who are fighting for their lives. When I get to those rough patches, I think of them and it keeps me going.
So I’m off to another amazing journey to complete my 3rd marathon! You can track my progress at my LLS blog (and you can donate there) at http://pages.teamintraining.org/mid/kc13/dwihelm. I’ll also post updates here. Train with me and let me know how you’re doing!
This month I wrapped up my half-marathon “race gauntlet,” completing my 6th half-marathon of the year at the Hospital Hill race in KC. For once, a race photo I can share….lol….
On Oct 12th I ran the Chicago Marathon, with ~50k runners! ...
