As the saying goes, you don’t always appeciate something until you lose it. So very true! Throughout my illness (pneumonia) I sorely missed running. So now that I’m on my “Journey Back,” I have a new perspective about the sport I love.
Often, when you’ve taken a period away from running for whatever reasons, the road back is a rough one. For me, it has been hard but not at all sufferable. I am so happy to be running again that I don’t really care that I’m slower than before or that my body is not as fit as before. It’s just plain joyous to be able to run again!
During my bout with pneumonia, I signed up for the Rock the Parkway Half-Marathon on April 8th as a source of motivation and inspiration that I would quickly get back on the trail. Am I HM ready? Not really…at least not to run a PR. But I am feeling good about finishing and finishing in a strong way. Ran 9 miles yesterday, pulling up my long run due to thunderstorms forecasted for Fri/Sat. The run was truly glorious! My pace is gradually improving, I felt great and the scenery at the lake was fantastic. I did have to stretch my Achilles out a few times but all in all, a great training run!
I truly think part of my fun during my Journey Back is due to my discovery of Yellowstone Nutra products. I now use their XM25 before lifting workouts, and combine their protein powder + Amino Blast as my post run recovery shake. YS Nutra has helped me to get back in shape without a lot of soreness and has kept my energy levels high. Maybe even best of all, the flavors are YUMMY! So far, my fav protein powder flavor is Froot Hoops! I’ll keep you posted as I try other flavors. If you want to try their products at a discount, use this code: DWILHELM10 at checkout. I think it’s important to take obstacles that we encounter in life and turn them into catalysts for success. Going through my 5 weeks of pneumonia has given me two such building blocks. First, I now genuinely appreciate the joy I feel when I run and I am less worried about my performance. Yes, I’ll still train hard and strive to improve but now I really value the sheer fun of running and the way it makes me feel during the sport and after. Second, I am happy to have been approached by Yellowstone Nutra, ironically while ill, to try their products. What a boost YS Nutra has given me; I’m glad I remained open minded and now I am a definite fan and Ambassador!
Running, especially marathons, continues to parallel life for me. Having the right perspective and attitude are critical to both. If you look at everything around you with a negative lens, soon that will be all you see — negative. If you look at everything around you with a positive lens, a lens toward helping, you’ll still see the bad things but you’ll see them from a perspective of “how can I make this better?” Your motivation is to help not blame.
Run happy, run strong, and never quit! Di
Perspective is an amazing thing. It keeps us real....
